Master’s Programs for International Students 2026

 

1.      Introduction

        Shanghai Polytechnic University was founded in 1960. It is a public university under Shanghai Municipal Administration, featuring engineering as its core and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. It is also a (cultivation) unit for Shanghai’s doctoral degree authorization. SSPU adheres to the orientation of training applied technology talents to meet social demands. The university has produced over 200,000 technical and applied talents of various kinds for Shanghai and nationwide. 

SSPU has significant geographical advantages and strong teaching faculty. The main campus Jinhai Road Campus is located in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, adjacent to China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and a number of Fortune 500 companies. SSPU has 16 colleges and schools, over 16,000 full-time students and about 1,200 faculty and staff. SSPU now offers 13 master’s degree programs, 50 bachelor’s degree programs and some high-quality higher vocational programs covering 8 fields of disciplines including Engineering, Management, Economics, Science, Arts, Literature, Education and Law.

The discipline of Engineering ranks the top 1% of ESI global rankings. The university focuses on constructing two featured and advantageous disciplines, Mechanical Engineering (Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering) and Materials Science and Engineering (Energy Conservation and New Energy Materials), and emerging cross disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Energy and Environmental Protection, etc. The university also plans some future disciplinary directions, including Integrated Circuit Engineering, Standardization Engineering, Intelligent Medical Engineering, etc. The establishment of research institutes such as the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, Integrated Circuit Research Institute, and Intelligent Medical Engineering Research Institute empowers the development of key engineering fields of the university.The students have participated in more than 410 discipline and skill competitions of various kinds at the provincial and ministerial level and above, and won more than 2,100 awards in total including nearly 800 national awards.

SSPU has over 10 scientific research platforms, such as Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Advanced Thermal Functional Materials, Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center for Reverse Logistics and Supply Chain, Shanghai Professional Technology Service Platform of Big Data for Thermophysical Properties, Shanghai Standardization Innovation Center, Shanghai Green and Low Carbon Service Institution, Shanghai Digital Cultural Tourism Design and Innovation Center, etc.   Great importance is attached to the integration of industry and education and all-round cooperation is carried out with famous enterprises and research institutes such as COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd., CSSC Power (Group) Co., Ltd., Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd., Huahong Group, Shanghai Electric Group, Shanghai Inspection, Testing & International Certification Co., Ltd., Bank of China Shanghai Branch, Shanghai Disney Resort, Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Computing Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai Research Institute of Materials Co., Ltd., etc. 

Currently, the university offers 6 master’s programs for international students. The program duration is 2.5 years for International Business, International Chinese Language Education; and 3 years for programs including Electronic Information, Resources and Environment, Materials and Chemical Engineering, and Energy and Power.

 

2. Qualification of Applicants

(1) Foreign citizens in good physical and mental health, and with a bachelor’s degree;

(2) HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 5 or above is required for enrolling in courses taught in Chinese;

(3) IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Score 6.0 or above is required for enrolling in courses taught in English;

 

3. Required Documents for Application

(1) Identification photo

(2) Photocopy of passport page with photo;

(3) Photocopy of bachelor’s degree certificate and transcript;

(4) Photocopy of language proficiency certificate, such as HSK, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. (English proficiency test reports are only required for non-native English speakers);

(5) Photocopy of two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher (with recommender’s signature and contact information);

(6) Personal statement;

(7) Self-introduction video

(8) Statement of financial support;

(9) Certificate of no criminal record;

(10) Other supporting materials required by Shanghai Polytechnic University.

Note: The original documents of the above photocopies should be presented at the registration.

 

4. Application Procedure

(2) Complete the application form in the system;
 (3) Upload the documents as required above;

(4) Submit the application.

 

5. Application Schedule and Admission Notice

Application deadline: July 31, 2026

 

Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202) will be issued to the admitted applicants in several batches before the beginning of the new semester.

 

6. Visa Application and Admission Registration

The admitted students should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202), and other required documents to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, and apply for a student visa (X visa). The students shall come to International Student Affairs Office, Shanghai Polytechnic University for registration before the deadline indicated in the Admission Notice.

Appendix 2.  Description of Master’s Programs offered in English

 

I. Master of Resources and Environment (Professional Degree)

Program Objectives:

This program is based on the economic development needs, such as the carbon neutrality strategy and circular economy, to solve major technical and environmental problems in the resource recycling process of typical solid wastes represented by electronic waste, and especially to meet the urgent demand for high-quality talents who master the theoretical knowledge and cutting-edge technologies of resources, environment and safety in emerging industries. It takes the entire industrial chain of typical solid waste treatment and disposal in cities as the support point, and focuses on the research and development of resource utilization, environmental pollution prevention and control, and environmental protection equipment, as well as conducts related scientific research and talent cultivation.

 

Acquired Knowledge and Ability:

It involves the intersection and integration of many disciplines such as environmental science and engineering, chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, information and computing science, and materials science and engineering, promoting the scientific and effective recycling of resources, and promoting low-carbon, clean and safe production and sustainable development. They should be capable of conducting technological research and development, engineering design, project consultation and operation management in this field.

 

Career Opportunities:

Independently undertaking specialized technical work such as engineering planning, engineering design, engineering implementation, engineering research, engineering development, engineering consultation, and engineering management in a certain direction of resources and environment.

 

 

II. Master of Materials and Chemical Engineering (Professional Degree)

 

Program Objectives:
This program is aligned with key emerging industries, particularly in Dual Carbon goals (carbon peak and carbon neutrality) and energy conservation & environmental protection. Leveraging the industrial advantages of Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region, it focuses on disciplinary development and talent cultivation in the field of Advanced Energy Saving and Energy Materials. The program aims to cultivate high-level, application-oriented professionals with a solid theoretical foundation in materials and chemical engineering, strong capabilities in engineering practice and technological innovation, and the ability to engage in technical development, engineering design, and project management in related fields. The program includes three distinctive research directions: Thermal Functional Materials and Thermal Control Technology, Advanced Energy Materials and Energy Saving Technology, and New Chemical Materials and Processing Technology.

 

Acquired Knowledge and Ability:

1. In-depth knowledge and systematic expertise in materials, chemical engineering, or related fields.

2. Strong capabilities in engineering design, technological innovation, and solving complex engineering problems.

3. Proficiency in utilizing advanced experimental techniques, modern tools, and simulation methods for scientific research and product development.

4. The ability to conduct independent research, work effectively in teams, and communicate complex technical information clearly.

 

Admission Requirements:
A bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.

III. Master of Energy and Power (Professional Degree)

 

Program Objectives:
Energy and Power is a core foundational industry crucial for economic development, supporting vital sectors like mechanical manufacturing, aerospace, and electronics. It targets emerging fields with a focus on low-carbon technologies, energy conservation, environmental protection, and energy storage. Utilizing the regional advantages of Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta, it concentrates on talent cultivation in power processes related to energy conversion, transmission, and utilization, clean energy technologies, and energy storage technologies. The program aims to produce high-level, application-oriented engineers with robust professional competence and innovation capabilities in the energy and power sector. The program includes three core research directions: Power Engineering, Clean Energy Technology, or Energy Storage Technology.

 

Acquired Knowledge and Ability:

1. Systematic, specialized knowledge and advanced technical skills in energy, power, or related fields.

2. The ability to apply engineering principles and advanced technologies to analyze, design, and develop solutions for complex energy and power systems.

3. Strong capabilities in engineering practice, technological innovation, and managing energy-related projects.

4. Skills necessary for R&D, system design, and optimization in areas like efficient energy use, clean energy conversion, and advanced energy storage.

 

Admission Requirements:
A bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.
